How Sandblasting Works

  1. Assess. The contractor checks the material, size, current coating and condition, from photos or a visit. Soft or old surfaces get a test patch.
  2. Choose media and method. Angular grit for rust and paint, steel shot for heavy steel, glass bead for a satin finish, soda or wet blasting for gentler work.
  3. Prepare. Parts are stripped or masked, and dust is contained so nearby cars, plants, windows and neighbours are protected.
  4. Blast. The surface is cleaned to the agreed standard or profile.
  5. Clean and protect. Dust and spent media are removed. Bare steel is primed or coated quickly, because it starts rusting again within hours in coastal air.

Ask each contractor which media they will use and what happens to the surface after blasting.

Blasting Media

  • Mineral and slag grit. Garnet, copper or iron slag and aluminium oxide. Angular, fast and leaves a profile that paint grips.
  • Steel shot and steel grit. Recycled in blast rooms and wheel machines. Shot is round and peens, grit is angular and cuts.
  • Glass bead. Round beads that clean and leave a satin finish without much profile.
  • Soda. Sodium bicarbonate. Soft, removes coatings and grime, does little to the substrate.
  • Wet or vapour blasting. Media mixed with water. Less dust and a smoother finish.

Workshop or On-Site

  • Workshop. Items that can be moved go into a blast cabinet or booth. Controlled, faster and usually cheaper per item.
  • On-site. Buildings, tanks and fixed steelwork are blasted where they stand. Needs space, a compressor, containment and clean-up, which adds cost.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Compiled from price guides and price lists published on South African websites (published between April 2025 and July 2026: a metal-painting price guide, an industrial coating price list, a Cape Town wheel powder-coating guide, a decorative glass price guide and a paving cleaning guide), checked 13 October 2026 and rounded. Most are national or Gauteng guides, so Cape Town quotes can differ. Unless a row says so, the sources do not state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote. Photos, an inspection and a written quote set the actual price.

Material, surface area, condition, access, transport, masking and the finish needed after blasting set the final price.

What to Include in Your Enquiry

  • What needs blasting: item, structure or surface.
  • Material and rough dimensions or square metres.
  • Current condition: rust, paint, powder coat, graffiti, soot or mill scale.
  • Photos, close up and of the whole item.
  • Whether it can go to a workshop or must be done on-site, with access details.
  • The finish you want after blasting, your suburb and preferred timing.

Availability

Requests come from across Cape Town. Contractors are independent and decide which jobs they take on, so availability depends on the job, the method and whether it can go to a workshop.

Comparing Sandblasting Contractors

Compare like with like:

  • Scope. Which surfaces, how much stripping and masking, and who removes and refits parts.
  • Media and standard. Which abrasive, and what cleanliness or finish they will deliver.
  • Containment and clean-up. How dust and spent media are controlled and removed, especially on-site.
  • Coating. Whether primer, paint or powder coating is included, and how soon after blasting.
  • Insurance. Public liability cover, with proof, for on-site work.
  • Price and VAT. Per item, per m² or per day, call-out or transport fees, and whether VAT is included.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this service work?

You send one enquiry. Relevant independent sandblasting contractors contact you and quote. You compare and choose, or appoint nobody.

Does it cost anything?

No. Requesting quotes is free and there is no obligation. Your agreement is with the contractor you appoint.

Do you do the sandblasting yourselves?

No. This is a quote-comparison service. Independent contractors assess, quote and do the work.

How much does sandblasting cost in Cape Town?

Published South African guides put sandblasting for surface preparation at roughly R80 - R150 per m² and powder coating at R200 - R400 per m². Small items are usually priced per item. Material, condition, access and the finish you need change the price most.

Is sand still used for sandblasting?

The name has stuck, but dry blasting with silica sand creates dust that is a serious health hazard. Most professional contractors use silica-free media such as garnet, slag grit, aluminium oxide, steel shot, glass bead or soda. Ask which media will be used.

Can anything be sandblasted?

No. Thin sheet metal can warp, soft brick and timber can be damaged, and glass is only frosted on purpose. The contractor should look at photos or the item first and may suggest a gentler method or a test patch.

Do I have to bring the item to a workshop?

Loose items are usually cheaper to blast in a workshop. Structures, buildings, tanks and large steelwork can be blasted on-site, which needs space, containment and more set-up.
