How Powder Coating Works

  1. Strip. Old paint or powder is removed chemically, by burn-off or by blasting.
  2. Blast and clean. Rust and scale are blasted off and the surface degreased. Some coaters add a phosphate or similar pre-treatment.
  3. Apply. Charged powder is sprayed on and clings to the grounded metal.
  4. Cure. The item is baked in an oven, usually around 180 - 200 °C, until the powder flows and hardens.
  5. Inspect. Coverage, thickness and finish are checked.

Finishes and Colours

  • Gloss, satin, matt and textured finishes.
  • Standard colour ranges, often by RAL code, with specials at extra cost.
  • Metallic, candy and two-tone effects on wheels and parts.
  • Zinc-rich primer under the colour coat for outdoor steel near the sea.

Item Size and Material Limits

  • Oven size. The item must fit the oven. Ask for the maximum size before removing a large gate.
  • Heat. Anything that cannot take curing temperatures, such as plastic, rubber, wood, glass, bearings and seals, must come off.
  • Metal only. Steel, aluminium and stainless steel are standard. Cast parts can release trapped gas and need pre-baking.
  • Galvanised steel. Can be coated, but needs proper preparation to avoid blistering.
  • Welded joints and hollow sections must be vented so they do not burst or blister in the oven.

Stripping Requirements

Powder does not stick properly over old paint, rust or failing powder. Items are stripped to bare metal, which is often the biggest part of the cost on old gates and furniture. New, clean steel needs only light blasting and degreasing.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Compiled from price guides and price lists published on South African websites (published between January 2026 and April 2026, including a Cape Town wheel powder-coating guide, plus one undated powder-coater's indicative price list), checked 13 October 2026 and rounded. Most are national or Gauteng guides, so Cape Town quotes can differ. Unless a row says so, the sources do not state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote. Photos, an inspection and a written quote set the actual price.

  • Removing and refitting items, and transport.

What to Send With Your Request

  • Photos of each item and its current coating.
  • Sizes, especially for gates and large frames.
  • The metal, if known.
  • Colour code or finish wanted.
  • Whether you can deliver and collect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is powder coating better than paint?

On items that fit an oven, powder coating is usually tougher and more even. Paint suits fixed structures and is easier to touch up on site.

Can a gate be powder coated without removing it?

No. Powder coating needs an oven, so the gate must be removed and transported. Fixed steel is painted instead.

Do I need to strip old paint first?

Yes. Powder over old paint or rust fails early. Most powder coaters strip and blast as part of the job.

Can aluminium be powder coated?

Yes. It needs the right cleaning and pre-treatment for good adhesion.

How long does powder coating take?

Often a few working days, depending on stripping, colour availability and how busy the coater is. Ask for turnaround in the quote.

Can wheels be powder coated with the tyres on?

No. Tyres, valves and weights come off, and the wheel should be checked for cracks or bends before coating.
