Workshop or On-Site

Most glass sandblasting is done in a workshop, on panes removed from their frames or on new glass before installation. Some contractors can blast installed glass on site with full masking, but it is limited and not always possible. Toughened safety glass can be frosted, but it cannot be cut afterwards, so new panes are often ordered already sandblasted.

What the Process Involves

  1. Agree the design, size and position, often with a mock-up.
  2. Cut a stencil or mask for the design.
  3. Blast the exposed areas to the depth and texture wanted.
  4. Remove the mask, clean and optionally seal against fingerprints.

Limitations

  • Blasting cannot be undone. Check the design and the side of the glass carefully.
  • Frosted areas mark more easily. A sealer helps.
  • Fine detail and very small text depend on the stencil and media.
  • Old or damaged glass may crack during handling or blasting.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Compiled from price guides and price lists published on South African websites (published in January 2026 by a decorative glass price guide), checked 13 October 2026 and rounded. Most are national or Gauteng guides, so Cape Town quotes can differ. Unless a row says so, the sources do not state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote. Photos, an inspection and a written quote set the actual price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sandblasted glass the same as frosted film?

No. Sandblasting permanently textures the glass. Film is a vinyl layer stuck onto the glass. It looks similar but can be removed.

Can installed windows be sandblasted?

Sometimes, with careful masking, but most work is done in a workshop on removed or new panes. Ask whether on-site work is possible for your glass.

Can toughened glass be sandblasted?

Yes, it can be frosted. It cannot be cut or drilled afterwards.

Does sandblasted glass show fingerprints?

It can, because the surface is textured. A sealant reduces marking and makes cleaning easier.

Can a mirror be sandblasted?

Yes. Designs are usually blasted on the back, through the silvering, or on the front surface for a frosted pattern.
