Rust, Mill Scale and Old Coatings
Rust

Mill scale
New hot-rolled steel has a blue-grey mill scale. It looks sound but flakes off later and takes the paint with it. Blast it off before coating anything that must last.
Old coatings

Preparing for a Protective Finish
